New Year, New Me, New Job...

Happy New Year!

We hope you had a wonderful time over the holidays.

January is a month of change, and when the clock strikes midnight on New Years Eve, for most of us it marks the possibility for a fresh start. Many people may make resolutions to go to the gym, change their diet, or to start a new project!

One of your New Years Resolutions might be to find a new job – and if you are thinking of changing jobs or careers, in this blog we are focusing on that goal for a new and fresh gig.  Of course, our advice here is not to simply quit your job and start your hunt for the next challenge – this does require some form of planning and effort to ensure you are successful in your goals as it can be a lengthy process.

Before you start your job search, ask yourself the following:

·         Why do you want to change jobs?

·         Do you feel that you have little opportunities to progress in your current role?

·         Do you want to try something new?

·         What skills can you take to a new role?

·         What experience do you have?

·         What jobs can you realistically look at doing?

These questions can help you decide what you want to do next, and help you determine exactly why you want to leave your current role!

After this you should begin updating your CV. Make sure it is up to date, written in the past tense, and that it is clear and legible. You can check out our blog about writing your CV, and also download our toolkit which has a template for CVs!

Another good idea once you have your CV together is to get registered with a recruitment agency and to upload your CV on to job boards such as TotalJobs and Reed. If you’re using job boards, make sure you complete your profile and use correct information, so when you come in searches done by recruiters, you come up in the right areas! Here at Red Door we can help you find your ideal role! You can either apply for any of our roles here, or send your CV directly to us at info@reddoorrecruitment.co.uk.  You can also check out our previous blog on how to get started looking for your new role!

LinkedIn is also a fantastic resource for job-seeking! It allows you to network with old and new connections, and allows recruiters to seek potential candidates for new job roles. Your profile needs to be up-to-date and as appealing as possible, and you should use it as a tool to interact with other professionals and employers in your industry. Check out our blog guides on using and setting up LinkedIn here and here.

Most importantly, however, make sure you are applying for the right jobs. Don’t apply for anything and everything – apply for the jobs you are fully interested in, and that you can see yourself doing. Your time is better spent making your applications stand out rather than applying to everything you come across!
