Looking for a new role? Here are some great tips on how to get started!

Are you ready to look for a new job? With all the insecurity of the last year, you might have found yourself reluctant to leave your position even if you wanted to. Now things are returning back to normal and the job market is bustling once again- now might be the time to start looking!

Beginning your job search can be daunting and it’s difficult to know how to get the ball rolling. Therefore, we’ve laid out a few handy tips below to get you on the path to finding your perfect, new role!

Your CV

  • Before you start any job search, your CV must be up to date, clear to read and without grammatical errors

  • Your CV will be sent to potential employers throughout your job search, therefore it is vital that it is carefully constructed, well laid out and will ultimately stand out from the crowd!

  • If you need any help with this, please refer to our previous blog on ‘CV writing tips’, along with our CV template on the Red Door website

Searching and applying for a job online:

Once your CV is good to go, one of the most frequent ways people will find their new job is by searching online.

Here at Red Door we are ready to help you find your perfect role! You can send your CV to us by applying for a job on our website here OR send it directly to us on info@reddoorrecruitment.co.uk

You can also upload your CV to multiple online job boards, if doing so, ensure the following;

  • You complete your profile and if you upload a picture, ensure it is appropriate and professional

  • Add in your correct postcode on your profile so that the jobs you search for come up within the area in which you will be able to commute to

  • Additionally, putting in your honest salary range will help find the most suitable jobs for you. Don’t go too low or too high, this will only hinder your application in the long run!

When searching and applying for new jobs online…

  • Only apply for jobs that you really want, that you’re qualified for and that you can travel to — applying for jobs that you can’t actually picture yourself in will only delay your job search from both your end and the recruiters

  • Keep track of the jobs you apply for so that you’re well informed and up to date if a recruiter calls you to discuss it!

  • Answer your phone and check your emails regularly; as soon as you’re on the job search things can move quickly, and you wouldn’t want to lose an opportunity because you’ve missed a call or message

  • Even if you’re not working when looking for your new job, it is important you still try and get up at a reasonable time. If you’ve applied for a job, most recruiters will call you first thing, and it doesn’t give the best impression if you’re still fast asleep!

Also…

When applying for jobs online, it is important that you are aware of the difference between each job type. This can be confusing, but it is vital you know what type of job would be most suitable for you

Permanent: You will not have a predetermined end date to employment

Full time: In the calendar month, as a full time employee you will be employed on average at least 35 to 37.5 hours of service per week

Part time: A part-time worker is someone who works fewer hours than a full-time worker. Part-time employment is usually less than 30 hours a week, this can sometimes be confused with temporary

Temporary: You will be in an employment situation where the working arrangement is limited to a certain period of time based on the needs of the employing organisation

Contract: A contract employee is an individual retained by a company for a predetermined time

Searching and applying for a job in person:

You may start your job search by contacting local recruitment agencies and arranging face to face registrations.

It is just as important to make a good first impression at your registration with an agency as it is at an interview…

  • Dress for success! Looking smart and professional will make a great first impression and will be good practice for when you start going for job interviews

  • Bring a neat and printed copy of your CV — it will also be useful to have a copy in your emails on your phone in case you need to email it over to the recruiter during your registration

  • Smile and maintain eye contact and be honest with what you’re looking for, you need to find what’s right for you

  • Bring a notebook and write notes on what you are looking for in your next role, and ask lots of questions!

Give yourself time…

  • It is vital that you give yourself enough time when searching for a new job, we wouldn’t recommend leaving a job until you have secured a new role either

  • Applications and the interview processes can take weeks, meaning you should begin the process as soon as possible if you are looking for a new job

  • You should also bear in mind your notice period and allow yourself enough time to work your notice when you find your next position
