How to stay productive and energised at work

Staying motivated throughout the day can be difficult, and sometimes it’s hard to be productive when you’re sat at your desk all day. We’ve put together a few handy tips so that you can stay focused from beginning to end, so that you can feel the best you can, and work to the best of your capabilities!

Self-care: Healthy body = productive mind!

Making small changes to your daily routine can make all the difference when trying to stay focused and motivated throughout a long working day.

Taking some time out to look after yourself will enable you to focus on your work, limit the distractions in your workplace environment, and, more than likely, get along much better with your colleagues!

  • Have breakfast - even if this is something small. It will give you energy throughout the morning, and will also prevent you from eating unhealthy snacks whilst sitting at your desk!

  • Get enough sleep - you’ll be surprised at how going to bed just an hour earlier each night could really impact your mood, health and ultimately your focus during the day!

  • Exercising regularly — this doesn’t have to be anything strenuous, but just 20 minutes a day to raise your heart rate and get you away from the computer screen will release your endorphins, meaning you’ll feel more uplifted when trying to focus on your work.

  • Get outside at least a couple of times a day — even if this is only for a few minutes at a time. Plus, the walk outside will do you good — sedentary work does no one’s health any favours!

  • Limit your caffeine intake & drink plenty of water. Too much caffeine will dehydrate you and increase your chances of a bad nights sleep!

Write a to-do list!

Creating a to-do list every morning provides a great start for a productive day! This is a simple and easy way to order your workload and to set yourself small and achievable targets for your day.

You can use your list-making time to set priorities for the day, describing each task’s urgency:

  • Assign an A, B or C to every item, with A being an absolute must-do. B might be something you hope to accomplish and C can be an in-case-you-have-time task!

  • You can then tick off your items on your list as you go throughout the day, which mentally creates a sense of achievement and motivates you to stay productive!

Social media: save it for outside of the office

  • Keep social media to a minimum. Unless you need to use social media accounts for work, personal use of social media is a huge distraction in the workplace.

  • Although it is hard not to check Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even LinkedIn, these are all distractions that prevent you from concentrating on what you should be doing! You’d be surprised how much time browsing your social media takes up of your day!

  • Check them on your lunch break or when you finish work

Workplace conditions

  • Keep your desk and the area around where you work neat, tidy, and clean!

  • Whether it’s the first thing you do in the morning or the last thing you do in the evening before leaving your offices, make it a daily ritual to tidy your desk. A tidy desk helps to clear the mind by aiding concentration.

  • Also, investing in some multi-surface wipes to clean your workspace will make you feel much better mentally and physically; you don’t realise how many germs can be hiding on your keyboard!

  • An environment that’s too hot or too cold distracts from concentration, s comfortable working temperature is between 68 and 70 degrees F (20–21 C).

Finally… get to know your colleagues!

  • It is so important to take some time out to socialise and get to know your colleagues on a more personal level… after all, you do spend most of your time at work!

  • Having people you can trust and have a laugh with at work makes all the difference, especially when they can support you through the bad days!

  • If everyone knows each other, the team’s productivity can increase because people will work better together and feel more comfortable. One of the main benefits of getting to know your co-workers is the strong bonds and camaraderie that can be formed.

  • A cohesive work environment will help you perform your job duties more effectively and create a much happier workplace!
